Lost Another Panda

The largest Panda Cory died today. I’m not sure what caused it. I’ve had her for several years so it may have been of natural causes. None of the other fish are showing signs of stress and the water parameters are normal.

Above is a photo of one of the latest additions to the 40 gallon “Swamp” tank. I purchased 5 (2 male, 3 female) Pseudocrenilabrus nicholsi from AOA on Friday. These fish are absolutely gorgeous. When the light hits them right it’s as if their whole body lights up. The females are much smaller and their colors are very subdued compared to the males but they are very attractive in their own right. The females won’t stay still long enough for me to snap a clear photo of them.

They seem to be getting along very well with the swarm of Black neons and Von Rio Tetras. Not to mention the mass of Corys constantly cruising the lower half of the tank. I think it may be time to relocate some of the Corys. They eat just about anything I drop into the tank; flakes, mini-krill, blood worms (frozen and freeze-dried), etc.

Swamp Tank

I found one of the SAEs on the floor in front of the tank this morning. I’ve read that they have a habit of jump out of tanks given the opportunity but this is the first time one of mine has actually done it.

The Cherry Shrimp continue to breed. Every day it seems like I’m noticing more and more shrimp climbing in and out of the Java Moss.

From the photo above it’s obvious that things are looking much better in the 55 gallon. I’ve been doing 25% water changes each day and the lighting has been kept at 130W. At the rate the water is clearing up it should only be a few more days before I can return to the normal water change schedule.

I removed all of the Rotala Wallichii from the Swamp tank. It didn’t appear to be dying, it just wasn’t doing as well as I had hoped. For the first couple of weeks it really took off and then for whatever reason it just stopped growing. I wasn’t too disappointed, the plant was purchased whim with no real long term expectations for it. It has been replaced with a group of Rotala Indica trimmings from the 55 gallon tank. I also added a few Ludwigia Repens trimmings to see how they do.

Just for fun the remaining Ludwigia Repens trimmings were placed in the Grass tank. The Yellow and Pink coloring of the Ludwigia contrasts beautifully with the intense greens of the Java Moss and Glossostigma.
